Larry and Lorna Azevedo hosted their annual 4th of July parade and picnic in Corrales, NM. The Tin Lizzies assembled at the Azevedo’s residence around 8:30 AM to decorate their cars and begin setting up for the potluck picnic that was scheduled after the parade. Making it’s debut at this parade was “Buster”, Kirk and Susan Peterson’s barn fresh 1924 coupe. This car hadn’t run for at least ten years, but it had be rebuilt before its previous owner passed away. Larry purchased it from the widow, and recently sold it to the Petersons who were looking for a closed car to go along with their 1927 touring. With some adjustments and maintenance, Larry and Kirk got Buster running and Kirk plans to leave the car in unrestored condition. Also participating this year were members of Bernice Young’s family – the Sturdevant’s with David and Kari’s daughter Lee at the wheel of the Azevedo’s 1912 touring car. Prior to the parade, Lee had had only two Model T driving lessons!
When everyone was ready, all the parade cars proceeded to the staging area near Corrales Road which is near the parade route. We waited at the staging area until it was our turn to enter the parade. This year everything went smoothly with no break downs. The Tin Lizzies were cheered on by hundreds of spectators, including a lot of children, lining the village road. After the parade, everyone went back to Larry and Lorna’s for a fabulous picnic on the grass and under the Cottonwood trees. Joining the Tin Lizzies were members of the local Model A and early V8 clubs. We feasted on hamburgers, hotdogs, and the numerous side dishes and deserts that everyone brought to share. Everyone had a grand time!
Thank you to Larry and Lora for generously hosting this patriotic and delightful annual event!
