Day 3 – Friday, June 5, 2015
We started the day driving to the Santa Rita Mine and observed the big dig. Then 10 cars, with very stylishly dressed participants, headed to the La Esperanza Winery for a tour and manifold cooker meal. Tucked beside the rolling hills in the Mimbres Valley in Sherman, NM, the La Esperanza Winery lies in a fertile valley, where water is 25-90’ deep, and supports grape vineyards as far as you can see.
David and Esperanza Gurule are the third generation on the property. Founded in 1906 (with a house built in 1916 along the Gallinas River), the winery started production in 1998. They produce 700 cases of wine a year, of 8 varieties. Since their first year of production, they have been awarded medals for their wines.
In the afternoon, we traveled south on Hwy 61 to the City of Rocks State Park. Most cars drove through this majestic site, while others chose to drive back to Silver City. Once again our club members came to the aid of a fellow member stranded on the side of the road. The Schroeder’s car had developed a fuel delivery problem that was solved with some tinkering. Once again we have a fantastic group of mechanics in our club.
