Work Party at Larry’s Garage (March 30, 2013)

The work party at Larry’s Garage on March 30th, was abuzz with activity.  The primary task for the day was to disassemble Bruce’s 1926 coupe rear differential as Larry was concerned that it was making too loud a whining sound.  With several club members focused on the job, the rear end was dropped from the car and the differential quickly taken apart.  Most of the parts were in good condition as it was obvious that the differential had been gone over by a previous restorer. When measured, some of the parts, such as that ring and pinion gears, were worn enough to have contributed to the noisy rear end.  Some new parts would be replaced and others machined or shimmed.

The Duncan’s brought their 1920 touring car to change wheels.  They had built a replacement set of wheels (all 30″ x 3.5″) because their original set of 30″ x 3″ front and 30″ x 3.5″ rears (with wood felloes) would be difficult to change while on tour relative to demountable rims.  On this Saturday, Paul and Marilyn were able to change and lubricate the front wheels with the rears to be changed early the following week.  Tom Miles assisted the Duncan’s on this project.

Ken Rowland brought 21″ split rims to work on and is looking for another good rim for his 1926 roadster restoration project.

Don Souther’s 1924 Tudor steering had developed too much play, so Don and Vernon were at the work party to change the bronze front bushings.  Michael Housholder assisted in tapping the  bearings out and replacing them with the new ones.

Mark brought some body brackets for his 1925 pickup truck project that he purchased from the Chickasha Pre-War swap meet.  These brackets, as well as some top irons were sand blasted and wire brushed in preparation of repair and painting.  The top irons, also for the pickup truck project, are and incomplete set with the front irons missing.  He will continue to look out for some, or if none can be found, fabricate the missing irons from parts.

In addition to the Model T activities, Larry had sold a 1941 Mercury coupe and the new owner brought a truck and trailer to load it up and take it home.

This work party was very busy, productive, and well attended.
