Work Party at Larry’s Garage (Mar. 24, 2018)

Story and photos by Mark Wing

Larry’s Work Party of March 24 had a wide range of projects being worked on simultaneously.  Gene Barnhouse brought a malfunctioning Holley NH carburetor.  This carburetor was recently purchased from a parts supplier, but didn’t run correctly.  This carburetor was removed from his nephew, T. Daniel Barnhouse’s 1919 Model T touring car that was a gift from Gene’s father, and Albuquerque resident, Bill Barnhouse.  The carburetor was adjusted and we’ll look forward to hearing from Gene if the car runs better now.

Phil and Zack Lance brought a front wire wheel hub that was deformed, and needed modification before a Timken bearing race could be installed.  Larry machined the damaged hub on his Bridgeport mill so that the bearing race could be installed snugly using shim stock.

Jeff Richards brought a starter from his 1926 Model T roadster that was working intermittently.  After disassembly, the problem turned out to be the copper electrical contact that had desoldered from vibration.  Bob Ross had brought his large soldering iron and repaired the faulty contact.  Jeff also replaced the brushes while he had the starter apart.

Mark Dominguez continued reassembly of the engine/transmission for his 1927 touring car.  This was the transmission that suffered from a broken reverse drum and triple gears.  The drum was replaced, new triple gears and bushing were installed.  While everything was apart, the rod bearing caps were adjusted by removing shims.

John Hayne brought some front axles with stuck spring shackles.  Using heat, and in one case paraffin and heat (candle wax), the spring shackles were freed after some vigorous beating.  John also brought a brass carburetor for wire brushing.

Mark Wing brought 1925 touring car fender/top iron support brackets for media blasting.

Joining the fun on this day was Alexis, Zack Lance’s girlfriend who was visiting Larry’s Garage for the first time.  In addition to seeing all the day’s activity, Alexis got a Model T driving lesson in Larry’s very authentic 1923 truck on Larry’s soccer field.  She had a great time and we hope she’ll be a frequent participant in upcoming Tin Lizzie activities!

It was a very busy and productive work party – thank you Larry!
