Story and photos by Paul Duncan (edited by Mark Wing)
Saturday, December 21st, was a very productive work day at Larry’s Garage. Seven of us showed up at the Azevedo’s residence/garage in Corrales – Paul Duncan, Al Schwanke, Frank Lewark, Leonard Scarborough, Steve Kranz, Dave Ferro, and Kirk Peterson.
Steve, Frank, Leonard, and Larry worked on Frank’s 1924 Model T magneto alignment. Steve recorded the data as Frank made the measurements to the field coil and inserted shims as needed to tip the field coil to ensure perpendicularity to the tail shaft.
Leonard started working on axles for his 1926 Tudor, but he and Larry decided that he should buy new axles and retire the old ones to be repurposed for another less critical application.
Dave, Paul, Al, Kirk, and Larry finished up Al’s restoration of his 1926 touring car including installation of a brake light (with new wiring), and rewiring the ignition switch to remove an apparent short in the old switch. The distributor was accurately set with the strobe light and Larry resurrected an original Model T cut out with a modern diode and reset the generator to only generate 5 amps. New radiator hoses were installed and the bands all adjusted. Larry and Al took the restored touring car for its first drive out on Corrales Road and it passed. Larry will keep the T in his garage and will continue to test drive it until he’s assured that all bands are properly adjusted. Al will pick up and drive home his much improved touring car after the New Year’s holiday.
