Work Party at Larry’s Garage (June 29th, 2013)

The work party for this Saturday, June 29th, focused on Skip Dunn working on his 1914 Model T touring top and bows, Tom Miles and other club members working on Tom’s babbitted main bearings, Mark Wing’s 1925 engine and Ruckstell differential housing being worked on by Bob Hawk and Bob Ross, and Paul Duncan dropping his engine pan to retrieve a loose piece of metal from his distributor.

Mark’s engine had recently been bored and sleeved. It was now ready to have its oversized valve guides bored to 1/64th oversize, hardened valve seats bored, and eventually boring for oversized lifters. This had to be done before the block could be returned to Empire Engines to have the block surfaced and final cleaning. Bob Ross is a master welder and brazer, and he was helping Mark braze in a filler piece to a large drum Ruckstell housing that had small crack caused by metal fatigue. A spool was used to align the threaded filler piece and Bob did a masterful job brazing the pieces together. After detailing, no one would ever know that there was a repair made. Thanks Bob!

The loose piece of metal was the result of a generator part failure while on the August Portales tour. Evidently, the generator part broke free and worked its way down past the transmission gears to settle harmlessly at the bottom of the pan. Paul was able to drop the pan and retrieve the broken piece. Soon, Paul and Marilyn will have all the bugs worked out of their 1920 touring car. It will be running like a top soon as all the important mechanical parts of the car have been rebuilt. It’s also sporting a new Brassworks radiator!

A lot of work was accomplished that day with Larry’s expertise and facilities and with the assistance of some very experienced and skilled club members!
