Work Party at Larry’s Garage (Sept. 13, 2014)

Hogs heads and bushings have gotten a lot of attention at Larry’s garage lately.  Almost everyone has pedal shafts that have too much play and leak – and Larry has been perfecting his multi-step milling procedures to enlarge the holes in the hogs heads, insert bronze bushings, and add a modern oil seal on the casting exterior. During Dave Fero’s and Mark Wing’s engine and transmission rebuilds, the hogs heads have been removed, making it an opportune time to fix the excessive wear and resulting leak problem.

Larry had done the boring procedure to Dave’s hogs head at a previous work party and Dave was cleaning his parts and beginning reassembly of the pedals, cams, springs, etc.

Larry was boring Mark’s hogs head which is destined for his 1925 coupe. This engine and transmission were apart for repairs due to a malfunctioning magneto and cracked low speed drum.  In preparation for reassembly, Mark spent most of the day repairing and cleaning the pan that needed a new crank handle bushing and wishbone mounting studs.

Kirk and Bruce were focusing on replacing the spring and shackle bushings in the front end of Bruce’s 1925 Tudor sedan.  The engine and transmission in Bruce’s Tudor had recently undergone a rebuild after a catastrophic transmission failure.  It now purrs, but the front end was too loose.

Art Gebeau, our club member from Grants, NM, was making progress on his 1926/27 engine block preparing it for line boring.  The babbitt had been poured by a previous owner and there was enough material to allow for line boring.  This engine is destined for a speedster project that will have overhead valves, a new SCAT balanced crank, and other parts to make it a high-performing T engine.

Thanks Larry for another great work party!
