Workday at Larry’s Garage (Aug. 17, 2024)

Story and Photos by Paul and Marilyn Duncan

Workday’s lately have involved solving some unusual problems. Larry is good at quickly understanding the issue and then delegating will club members to work out the details. The Tin Lizzies who were the work day crew were:  Larry, Frank Lewark, Don Neidigk, Kevin O’Brien, Sean Hughes, Tim Heer, Jeff Richards, Andy Andrews, Dave Ferro, Paul and Marilyn Duncan, Neil O’Brien and briefly Mark Wing. Lorna Azevedo, MaryAnn O’Brien and Jill O’Brien (Kevin’s wife) chatted with the work crew.

Kevin drove the family La Verne firetruck with his father Neil. Kevin is retired from the Albuquerque Fire Department and will be taking over the La Verne. He is no stranger with a wrench and jumped right in. We enjoyed seeing Neil at a workday.

Andy brought his 1927 Coupe for some front end work. Dave Ferro assisted Andy in rebushing the spindle bolt bushings. Andy will be taking the coupe on the Santa Fe Tour. His dog Jackie joined Dave’s dog Kenzie at the work day.

The bigger project for the day was Tim Heer’s recently built speedster. Tim purchased the speedster John Hayne had in his garage unfinished for many years. Tim along with his son-in-law Sean Hughes trailered the speedster from Tim’s shop in Los Lunas. The engine ran rough and because of the unique carburetor linkage Tim built fine tuning the needle valve was difficult. The spark advance rod was rubbing on the fan belt. The low band adjustment was impeded by the 2nd firewall Tim had constructed.  The Duncan’s brought the special speedster hood that John had ordered and it surfaced during the time we cleaned out John’s house of T parts.  The speedster has a replica of Edsel’s special speedster radiator. (pictured) Tim plans to enter his speedster in a number of speedster events. Sean has started some of the sheet metal work on the boat tail. When completed Tim will have a spectacular speedster.

Jeff restored a starter by cleaning up the rotor in the lathe. (pictured)

Don brought the Ruckstell he recently purchased from Art Gebeau in Milan, NM. He needs to return to Milan to pick up the shifter rod and he showed the special picture on the shifter.
