Work Party at the Azevedo's Garage

Larry and Lorna held a work party on Saturday, January 15th. A number of Club members came including Dean Van Doren, Linda Riel, Russell and Julie Dilts, Vaughn Rockafellow, Don Mitchell, Don Souther and his friend Vernon Armstrong, Mark Wing, Paul and Marilyn Duncan, Brian Dean, Bob Ross, and Larry and Lorna's neighbor, Bobby Kossey.Club members had come with a wide-range of projects to work on and Larry, Dean, Don, Russell, and other Club members generously offered assistance and advice.

The Duncan's brought the wood firewall from their 1920 touring to show and to assess whether it needed to be replaced.  They had also removed the steering column and steering gears on a previous day for restoration under the guidance of Clarence Schritter.  Don Mitchell drove his 1927 Tudor for preparation to receive modern shock absorbers. Don's shock absorber brackets needed to have some voids filled. Luckily, Bob Ross is an expert welder and he quickly filled the voids in the parts. Vernon assisted Don in modifications to the Tudor to receive the brackets.

Bob Ross demonstrated how to repair a perforated gas tank with stainless steel cloth and a large soldering iron. Bob warned of the importance of thoroughly cleaning out the gas tank before applying heat and accentuated the point with anecdotes of tank explosions!

Russell Dilts had a carburetor hot air pipe that needed to be sand blasted and painted before installation. Mark Wing had driven his coupe to have a steering tie rod cap tightened and to grease the front wheel bearings.  Dean showed Mark and Russell how to remove and replentish the grease in the Timken bearings.

Larry had recently acquired the equipment to cast his own babbitts.  He described the process and showed his setup to do line boring.

We broke for lunch and the main course was a huge pot of delicious chili provided by Julie Dilts.  The meal was supplemented with fried chicken, cookies, chips, and drinks (the Tin Lizzies rarely ever go hungry!). During lunch, Lorna told us that their neighbor Bobby Kossey is an expert pinstriper. Bobby had previously pinstriped Larry's red Rajo speedster and the quality of his work was outstanding. Black coupes and sedans orginally came with a thin red pinstripe approximately 3/8" below the belt line.  The Wing's 1925 coupe was missing this important detail so Bobby went home to retrieve his painting supplies.  Bobby showed us photos taken in California of his impressive work on classic cars and vintage fire engines.  He demonstrated how to prepare the paint surface, mix the paint to just the right consistency, and how to apply the paint with his specialized pinstriping brush.  Bobby's technique and knowledge of his craft was very impressive and the result was a beautiful accent stripe exactly as described by Bruce McCalley in his Model T Ford, The Car that Changed the World (pg. 329, and captions on pgs. 337 & 339).

Brian Dean showed everyone a magneto that he had just purchased from Ebay.  It's an accessory Model T magneto that dates from approximately the mid-teens.  The part needs to be restored before its installed in a race car that Brian is building.  It should be spectacular when it's complete if Brian's speedster is any indication.

Thank you to Larry and Lorna for another productive and fun work party event!
