 2010 New Mexico State Fair

On Saturday, September 18th, twenty-one Model T's gathered outside the Expo New Mexico (fairgrounds) at 7:30 am in preparation for the annual Tin Lizzies car show.  Kirk and Susan Peterson had trailered their 1927 touring car from Santa Fe and Larry and Lorna Azevedo had their 1912 touring car and the 1925 roadster "take apart car" loaded in their 24-foot trailer.  All the other participants that morning had driven their T's to the meeting point at the southwest corner of Central Ave. and San Pedro Blvd.

At 7:45, the Tin Lizzies formed a line and drove the short distance into the fairgrounds.  With so many Club members on hand, setting up the exhibit area was very fast and efficient.  Our Club President Nancy came prepared with printed signs with the year, body-type, and car owners to attach to the T windshields.

Two "take apart car" demonstrations were scheduled.  The first at 10:00 am and the second at 1:30 pm.  Prior to the demonstrations, Larry and his crew of volunteers had to take the roadster apart first. At twelve minutes and thirty-six seconds, the first demonstration did'nt break any Club speed records, but the audience was delighted with the entertainment none the less - especially when Larry successfully started the roadster immediately after reassembly.

The second demonstration was a bit faster and Larry is aready making plans to make next year's demonstration run even more soothly and bring the time down!

At 91 degrees, the State Fair weather didn't feel like the approach of fall and tied with the previous high-temperature record in Albuquerque.  In spite of the warm conditions, the Club's location within the cordoned area under the trees was very comfortable.  Club members and their guest had ample time to relax, socialize, field questions by curious spectators, see the exhibits, and take advantage of tasty (if not dietetic) State Fair food concessions.

At around 3:30 pm, the NM State Police cleared the way for the Tin Lizzies' departure from the fairgrounds.  With horns honking and fair goers waving, the Tin Lizzies Club members headed for home.

This year's State Fair event was enjoyable and went very smoothly.  There were no mechanical problems; the weather was kind (it has rained in previous years); with 21 cars present, the Club was well represented; and there was genuine interest from some of the visitors to consider joining the Club.

Thank you to all of the Club officers and members who planned and volunteered for this annual show.  With an active and public role in the community, the Model T hobby will continue to endure and thrive.  It was another successful and enjoyable Tin Lizzies summertime event!
