Work Party at the Azevedo's
Garage
Larry and Lorna hosted the second work party for the
month on Saturday, January 29th. The event was well attended by Club President Dean Van Doren, Linda
Riel, Don Mitchell, Don Souther, Vernon Armstrong, Mark Wing, Neil O'Brien, Brian Dean, Ken Carpenter, and Larry
and Lorna's neighbor, Bobby Kossey. The projects for the day included progress on the Ken Carpenter's engine
rebuild, Brian Dean's magneto restoration, Don Mitchell's shock absorber installation, Mark Wing's luggage rack
restoration, and an assessment of the condition of some parts from Tim O'Brien's T fire
truck.
Ken Carpenter's 1916 speedster needed to be rebuilt after
it broke a rod. While the engine was apart, the bearings were checked and turned out to be in dire
need of replacement. Luckily, Larry had recently aquired the capability of casting babbitt and line boring
the main bearings. Plastigage showed a consistent clearance of 0.002", so Larry's boring equipment
and machining expertise yielded outstanding results!
Brian Dean had purchased an after-market magneto for a race
car project he's working on. The mageneto had been damaged and had cracks in its aluminum cover. Brian
had a shop weld the cracks and brought the part over to Larry's for machining.

The bearings on Ken's engine turned out beautifully. Ken is saving uncontaminated babbitt shavings for reuse.
Brian Dean had his early after-market magneto housing welded where it had been damaged and cracked.
